Few years ago I’ve made a Proof of Concept for a smart city, showing how we can build super smart applications using open source tools and Marieai.com
Can AI learn about a city by watching it?
With Marieai.com a novel technique, allowing you to build unsupervised models, it’s easy to train and uptrain in an endless cycle — as you don’t need technical supervision nor expensive tech department!
Algorithms can simply learn about a city by watching it periodically. You don’t need PhD engineers, a well trained mid Data Scientist, using “Data Layering” technique is enough for you to run your smart city project.
Is it even useful?
Obviously, we should ask what such limited data sources — available for everybody — can do for smart cities? Surprisingly it’s quite smart indeed. Thanks to a Data Layering method for Data Science, models are smarter and more intuitive from the get go. Which is great especially if you want to deploy an autonomous system that costs almost nothing to operate and update.
Should I open a restaurant here?
MarieMaps can “understand” a city map and learn patterns in an intuitive way — again thanks to Data Layering . It’s particularly useful for predictions and pattern finding specific for a place on a map.
Have you ever wondered what would be the best place for a restaurant or a bus stop? If you haven’t let me tell you — it’s usually dozens of hours of a case study and analysis. Everything that could be automated with a solution that runs on a cheap VPS server!
How much does it costs?
And here is a sad story — it can be deployed and service people for pennies but I have failed to find a business partner to commercialise it and couldn’t secure some funds to make it a remote ( global) product that lives and operates, helping people solve smart city problems.

How to make cities even smarter?
MarieMaps and the whole Digital Hippocampus algorithm is perfect for such scenarios where you have to transfer patterns from one place to another. How does it works?
Imagine taking air/sound pollution or fire emergency patterns from one city (datasets outside OpenStreetMap) and translating it on other cities — to show projections, based on available data from other places. It could save milions of dollars and speed up the planning process, reducing the number of bad decisions. We could be much smarter in city/business planning.
MarieAI allows you to have separate models for each category. It also means, each city can have it’s own set of data. They are transferable, open to licensing for 3rd parties and easily adjustable. More informations can be added — as layers — even commercial ones.
What has been a huge venture, costing millions — such as simulations for smart city planning — could be done on a budget, based on MarieAI knowledge borrowed from other cities.
Vision project
Well, maybe my vision is not as ambitious — and expensive — as Bin Salman’s crazy cities but we could level up the know-how available for everyone.
- Where to build residential buildings,
- How to plan a city grid,
- Where to deploy offices, warehouses, bus stops, hospitals, schools or even specific shops,
- How to improve noise/air pollution benchmarks,
- How to make better cities without bancrupting municipalities.
What next?
